Job-Killing and Life-Saving Regulations

Every statement by a Republican politician must contain the term “job-killing regulations.”  I’m sure the USDA’s requirement beginning in 2003 that food products include information on the percentage of trans fats in processed foods has had its share of mentions.  Since then and following the Federal Government’s lead New York and a number of other jurisdictions have passed laws limiting trans fats in restaurant foods and cooking, and makers of processed food have voluntarily replaced trans fats with less harmful oils.  As a result between 2000 and 2008 the level of trans fats in Americans’ bloodstreams decreased 58%.  So maybe this unreasonable burden placed on processed food manufacturers was not a job killer but a life saver.
